Course Description:

UMass Chan Medical School is an authorized ATLS training provider through the American College of Surgeons. Upon successful course completion you will be issued an official ATLS provider card.

Advanced Trauma Life Support® (ATLS®), is a continuing medical education program developed by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, designed to teach a standardized, concise approach to the care of the trauma patient in the "golden hour" - the period following traumatic injury during which there is the highest likelihood of death. 

Providers who are in a position to provide the first hours of emergency care to trauma victims have the greatest opportunity to impact outcomes.

The course utilizes didactic lectures and practical skill stations in order to effectively teach the principles of rapid, effective assessment and stabilization.

ATLS Initial/Provider is a 2 day course. This course includes mATLS®—the newest addition to the ATLS program. It comprises of a pre-test & 13 online modules designed to replace the interactive discussion component of the traditional ATLS course so that learners may complete it at their own pace. 

Day 1:  Interactive review/discussion of the online course module materials. (in-person)

Day 2:  Complete the hands-on skills portion of the course and testing. (in-person)

1. Demonstrate the concepts and principles of the primary and secondary patient assessment
2. Establish management priorities in a trauma situation
3. Identify primary and secondary management necessary within the golden hour for the emergency management of acute-life threatening conditions
4. Participate in a simulated clinical and surgical skills practicum where they will demonstrate skills that are often required in the initial assessment and treatment of patient with multiple injuries.

Please note:  Initial/Provider courses are for those who are certifying for the first time.  If your ATLS certification has lapsed you are allowed to take a retrain up to 6 months after your expiration date (this grace period only applies to your ability to take a retrain course, it does not continue your certification period for hospital credentialing purposes).

Providers: physicians, fellows, residents, advanced practice providers (MD/DO/PA/NP)

Auditors: Each ATLS class can accommodate a small number of non-physicians to audit the course, commonly RNs and paramedics.

Approximately 1 month prior to the course, an ATLS Textbook will be sent via US mail or UPS to the address entered during registration. If you have any other questions or concerns, please email us at [email protected].

Advanced Trauma Life Support classes are non-refundable when canceled less than 2 weeks prior to the course date, or after course materials have been mailed (approximately 30 days prior to the course). Classes must be paid in full in order to receive a certification card and continuing education credit(s). A certification card will be distributed upon the signature of the state chair to your home addresses when you have successfully completed the course and have paid for the course in full. 

 

 

Cancellation Policy

University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School Office of Continuing Medical Education reserves the right to cancel or postpone this program if necessary; in the event of cancellation, course fees will be fully refunded. We are not responsible for other costs incurred such as non-refundable airline tickets or hotel penalties.
