Overview

The Society for Airway Management (SAM) is comprised of a multidisciplinary group of health care providers from Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Otolaryngology, Critical Care, and Pulmonology, as well as CRNAs, AAs, NPs, PAs, RNs and paramedics. The SAM 26th Annual Scientific Meeting and Workshop has been developed to feature international experts in the various fields of medicine dealing with airway management. Many aspects of difficult airway management, in a variety of clinical settings, will be highlighted. This course will consist of plenary presentations, small group round table discussions, and hands-on workshops.

The theme of this year’s meeting is: Improving Airway Management Across the Continuum – One Life Matters, No Matter Where


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Discuss current approaches and unique challenges to airway management in clinical practice across the spectrum of care locations, including prehospital, hospital, and office-based settings
  2. Discuss historical perspectives and future directions and challenges in technological innovation in airway management.
  3. Discuss unique airway management systems-based and cognitive challenges for clinicians working as part of the transient workforce.
  4. Describe specific approaches to airway management in prehospital rescue care.
  5. Describe specific approaches to lung isolation in the emergency room.
  6. Describe approaches and techniques for managing the narrowed airway.
  7. Describe important technological, cognitive, and system-based considerations for airway management in the neonatal/pediatric and obstetric populations.
  8. Describe specific approaches to oxygenation and methods to prevent cardiovascular collapse in critically ill patients.
  9. Discuss current guidelines and approaches for (a) upper bronchoscopy airway management, (b) use of point-of-care ultrasound in airway management, and (c) the prevention of unrecognized esophageal intubation.

UMass Chan Medical School is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
